William Melvin Kelley had used two different methods of characarization while writing his story. The first one is the direct characterization, where he states what exactly a character is like.
Here are two examples of direct characterization:
1)The writer described GL as a con man, part practical joker and part Don Juan, a legendary nobleman. He had spoken of GL with the kind of indulgence he would have shown a cute, but ill-behaved and potentially dangerous, five-year-old.
2)He also gave sharp details about the grandmother's face, such as mentioning the wrinkles. William described the old lady as a doll, made of black straw, and with white hair that grew straight out of her head. He didn't overlook her brown eyes that were hidden under her thick glasses.
The other type of characterization is the indirect characterization, or the character's thoughts and feelings, which can be expressed in a certain dialogue.
For instance:
1)We can predict that the grandmother has poor eyesight from the dialogue that took place between Aunt Rose and she. The sentence that tells us the most about her eye vision is : "Rose, who that?Rose?" She couldn't even differentiaite between two different people.
2)Another example of indirect characterization is when Charles's mom said: "He wouldn't never have brought my grandson to see me. I haven't ever heard from Charles." We reached a conclusion that Charles is a neglectful son, he is not that close to his mother as supposed to be.
